Bilateral Talks between Beijing and European Commission on Political Solution to Ukrainian Crisis

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that China is ready to discuss with the European Union a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis and hopes that the EU will show strategic independence and political wisdom.

“We are ready to discuss with the European side a political solution to the crisis and hope that the European side will show strategic independence and political wisdom and take decisive steps to achieve long-term peace and stability in Europe,” the spokeswoman added.

Mao Ning stressed that China is not a party to the Ukrainian crisis, adding that Beijing is actively advocating a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on China to play a “constructive” role in the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, stating Beijing’s ability to influence Russia.

Earlier, the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a 12-point statement containing a position on a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.

Among the main points: the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, the resumption of direct dialogue between Moscow and Kiev, the call to prevent further escalation. China also opposed the abuse of unilateral sanctions in the context of the Ukraine conflict, as they do not contribute to the resolution of the crisis.
