Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador has confirmed that he opposes the criminal charges against former US President Donald Trump, noting that they were made for political reasons during the election campaign.
López Obrador pointed out that the accusations against Trump, who is campaigning for the restoration of the presidency in the 2024 election in New York, constitute “a reduction in due respect for the law.”
He added: “I don’t agree with what they are doing to former President Trump… I don’t know if crimes have been committed because I don’t have the right to judge the situation from my seat,” opining that “it came from the fact that judicial and legal issues are not used for political and electoral purposes… Crimes are not fabricated.”
López Obrador had a close relationship with Trump in 2019 and 2020 despite repeated criticism of former U.S. President Mexico and immigrants and his plans to build a wall between the two countries, or more accurately, López Obrador had fewer public disagreements with Trump compared to with current President Joe Biden.
