The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation CBC has announced it is withdrawing from Twitter after it classified its account as a “state-funded media outlet”, which it considered unfair and questions its impartiality.
The move came after the exit of National Public Radio (NPR) in the US from Twitter for the same reason, and also following the success of the British Broadcasting Corporation BBC, changing its classification from “public funded” to ” public funding”. public funding”.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and its francophone Radio Canada said in a statement that Twitter has added the hashtag “publicly funded media” to its accounts, describing the type of treatment as similar to dealing with media in authoritarian countries such as Russia or Russia. China.
The statement added that the labeling in their case is “untrue and misleading.”
Although the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is funded by the government, its editorial independence is protected by the Canadian Broadcasting Act.
“Twitter can be a powerful tool for our journalists to connect with Canadians, but it undermines the accuracy and professionalism of their work, thus allowing us to distort our independence.”
“We will be suspending our activity on our corporate Twitter account, as well as all CBS and Radio Canada News accounts,” she added.
The CBC urged Canadians to follow her on other social media.
Conservative Canadian opposition leader Pierre Pullevere, who has openly expressed his disdain for the CBC and its funding methods, wrote to Elon Musk last week urging him to call it “publicly funded media” on Twitter.
It’s in the interest of transparency, he said, noting that nearly two-thirds of his funding for fiscal year 2021-22 came from the federal government.
On Monday, Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau slammed his rival for “attacking this Canadian institution and attacking the culture and its local content that is so important to so many Canadians.”
Since Musk acquired Twitter, the company has eased content restrictions and allowed the return of tweeters who were banned for hate speech and misleading information.
For years, he scorned the media, recently setting up automatic fecal email responses to reporter inquiries.
News organizations are struggling to abandon the platform, which remains the primary means of communication for celebrities, politicians and the elite.
